Historic Spar challenge
The north will witness an exciting 10km national championship later this year.
Spar Namibia yesterday launched the first-ever Spar 10km National Championship in Windhoek.
The historic event will take place between Oshakati and Ongwediva on 2 November.
“For the past couple of years, there has not been a national 10km national championship.
This will now, however, change, given that I have been directed to initiate a 10km national championship.
“This is going to be a big event that will also be accredited by the IAAF,” senior sports officer Berthold Karumendu said.
Karumendu lauded Spar Namibia for supporting the sporting fraternity, despite the economic challenges in the country.
He believes the initiative will set a trend for other local businesses to follow. Spar Namibia has committed N$100 000 towards the event, which will be run on an annual basis.
It is expected to attract people from Oshana, Omusati, Oshikoto, Ohangwena and the rest of Namibia.
Athletes will be completing over a 10km route from Oshakati to Ongwediva.
“Spar Namibia has been part of several marathon events, as a gesture to giving back to the community.
“It will be a memorable event that is expected to bring many athletes together.
“Everyone interested in competing in this historic event is welcomed,” Spar Namibia representative Elmarie Lewis said.
Sports ministry deputy director Jo-Anne Manuel said: “On behalf of the government, we would like to thank Spar Namibia for coming up with such an important event.
“I believe that it is important that locals increase their support to Spar shops, because they have proven that they can give back to the community.
“I call on other retail shops around towns in the country to do the same thing as Spar Namibia.”
Further details will be communicated to the public at a media conference before the start of the championship.
