A dynamic, speedy defender who hails from Otavi, Riaan Hanamub recently inked a three-year deal with Port Elizabeth-based Chippa United's 'Chilli Boys' in the newly renamed 2020/21 DSTV Premiership season.

The 25-year-old left-back, who holds experience at international level, was part of the team which won the 2015 Cosafa Cup and was also part of former gaffer Ricardo Mannetti's 2019 Africa Cup of Nations squad in Egypt.

He joined the club after 15 players left with head coach Lehlohonolo Seema, looking to build a new-look squad for the 2020/21 campaign.

Speed, strength and ability

Hanamub has incredible speed, strength and ability to switch the match at any given time, and is looking to bring these elements to his new side.

“Everyone at the club is welcoming and immediately at the first training session the players and technical side made me feel at home, so settling in won't take long as I feel comfortable already,” he said.

“My aim is to add experience to the club, help stabilise the defence and to also provide my attacking abilities going forward,” the player added.

Top eight goal

He further said his goal is to help the club in their quest to end in the top eight position at the end of the season.

In last season's campaign, which was won by Mamelodi Sundowns, Chippa ended in the 11th spot. Before moving to South Africa, Hanamub played for Touch & Go and Orlando Pirates. He joins the likes of Peter Shalulile (Sundowns), Deon Hotto (Pirates), Virgil Vries (Moroka Swallows) and Max Mbaeva (Golden Arrows) in the top South African league.

League kick-off

The new season will start on 24 October, Premier Soccer League chairman Dr Irvin Khoza confirmed on Wednesday.

This gives most clubs around a month to prepare for the new campaign, given that many returned to training last week.

The prize-money for the new season will remain the same, with the inaugural winners receiving R15 million for lifting the trophy.

The maiden DSTV Premiership matches will be preceded by the MTN8 quarter-finals, with those matches set to be played on the weekend of 17 and 18 October, and will officially kick-off the domestic campaign.

For the foreseeable future, matches will remain behind closed doors, but Dr Khoza said the league is hopeful the South African government will relax regulations in the coming months.
