President Hage Geingob has left for Russia to attend the first session of the Russia-Africa Summit in Sochi tomorrow.

The summit is expected to be attended by over 35 heads of state and government.

It will be preceded by the Russia-Africa Economic Forum, which is taking place today.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Namibian presidency said the summit is expected to adopt a declaration building on the friendly ties that exist between the Russian Federation and African countries.

According to presidential press secretary Alfredo Hengari, the summit will affirm collective commitment to the fundamental principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and the norms of international law, as well as the need for strict compliance to those principles by all states.

He added that at the end of the summit, the parties are expected to sign a declaration establishing a Russia-Africa Partnership Forum.

“The Forum aims to strengthen cooperation and collaboration in the political, security, economic, legal, technical, humanitarian and information communication technology fields between Russia and Africa,” he said.

After the summit, Geingob will travel to Baku, Azerbaijan, for the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement to be held on 25 October.
