Gearing up for the Nationals
Athletics Namibia hosted the second leg of the Grand Prix during the past weekend at the Independence stadium in Olympia.

Coming from far and wide to compete against the country’s best, Christine Mboma raced to the finish line to defend all her wins once again. She won the 200 metres in 22.30 seconds.
The men’s 200 metres winner, Mahmad Bock, clocked a time of 21.42 seconds.
The women of the Kakadhinwa Athletics Club dominated the long-distance running, scooping the first three places in in 800 metres as well the first four places of the 5 000 metres.
Saara Shikongo won the 800 metres with a time of 2:17.15; while Tresia Kakede in third in the 800 metres with a time of 2:21.47. Kakede also took first place in the 5000 metres, clocking a time of 18:32.86.
Elvis Gaseb, who came second in the men’s 200 metres, commented that he could have done better than his time of 21:46 seconds, which was only 0:04 seconds slower than the winner, Bock.
The men’s 800 metres was won by Joseph Jonas in a time of 1:49.31.
The winners of the 400 metres hurdles were Mariska Topnaar in the women’s race and Andre Retief in the men’s race.
During the Grand Prix the top club was the University of Namibia Athletic Club, raking in a total score of 106 points. The Quinton-Steele Botes Athletic Club was second with a total score of 87. The Kakadhinwa Athletics Club was third with its strong female competitors in the long-distance events.
