Gambling Board appointed to regulate industry

The Gambling Board has been inaugurated after a new Act to regulate the entertainment and gambling industry became operational at the beginning of this month.
Tourism minister Pohamba Shifeta said the new Gaming and Entertainment Control Act was enacted to create a new regulatory environment in the gaming and entertainment industry.
The act was gazetted on 13 December 2018 and the law and its regulations became operational on 1 December this year.
It replaces the former Casinos and Gambling Houses Act, which had become outdated to regulate the evolving industry.
A new board has therefore been appointed to take charge of the gambling and entertainment industry.
Flying start
Shifeta said the board was starting immediately with the most urgent matters and will take decisive actions and decisions given the urgency of some of these matters, and their potential legal consequences if not done on time.
The members are Ben Shikongo (chairperson), Toska Sem (deputy chairperson), Josua Kaumbi, Sandra !Owoses, Uerijeta Kauaria, Erastus Johannes and Amanda Heydenreich.
They will serve a term of three years effective from 1 July this year to 30 June 2024.
Shifeta urged the board to ensure that it is run on sound corporate governance principles.
“The ministry would like the board’s commercial activities to contribute to the economic growth of this country as required in the Harambee Prosperity Plan II and always safeguard inclusive development to benefit our people in Namibia.”
He added that the ministry had full confidence in the board’s skills and expertise and appealed to them to conduct the business of the board with dedication to the service of the Namibian government and the public.
“The gaming industry stakeholders are eagerly waiting for your efficient leadership,” the minister said.
