Former Namibian national goalkeeper Danzyl Bruwer has paid tribute to former Brave Warriors coach Seth Boois, who has died from to Covid-19.

According to Bruwer, he played the best match of his career under the leadership of the late Boois, as he earned a man of the match performance in a 1998 Cosafa (Council of Southern African Football Associations) Castle Cup match in Lusaka against Zambia.

“That was my second game for Namibia and he was the coach, so I have fond memories of him,” said Bruwer, who currently lives at Swakopmund.

Great memories

Bruwer recalls that Namibia was under a lot of pressure in that match. Zambia scored early in during the match but the Warriors midfielder Congo Hindjou equalised later for Namibia.

Namibia had no option but to defend like their lives depended on it as Zambia piled on an immense amount of pressure on the Warriors goal.

“There was this moment deep in the second half where I caught a ball. As I lay with the ball in my hands, the late Boois called me through all the noise. He even spoke to me in Damara. Me not understanding, I signalled that I understood and that I have everything under control,” Bruwer reminisces. The game ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

Bruwer adds that Boois contributed immensely towards Namibian football.

“He was a very knowledgeable person who knew Namibian football very well. It was an honour for me to play under him and I cannot stop thanking him for the trust that he put in me so that I could play for the country in the matches that I played under him.”

He said Boois deserves a hero's funeral and that this honour should not be reserved for politicians. The former goalkeeper hailed Boois as a disciplined, straightforward, open person from whom he learnt a lot.

Touching lives of many

Another former Warriors player who lives at the coast, Sandro de Gouveia, says although he was never coached by Boois, he played for Blue Waters against the team he was coaching at that time, which was Orlando Pirates.

“He was always a gentleman and humble when he talked to me,” he said. According to him, even though De Gouveia was an opponent in another team, Boois would encourage and compliment him as he saw him as a player that played for the nation too.

“He always made me aware and complimented me on my long passes, especially the 45-degree pass behind the defence, were unique and caused his team problems.

“That kind of advice and encouragement meant a lot to me in my soccer career,” said De Gouveia.

The player, who captained Namibia in the 1990s, offered his condolences to Boois's family and friends, saying prayer would allow God to give them the strength to get through the loss.
