Former governor of Oshana Region Silvanus Vatuva was buried at the Omulungwelume cemetery in the Ohangwena Region on Saturday.
President Hage Geingob paid tribute to Vatuva, saying he was a hardworking man who served his fellow Namibians with dedication.
Geingob said Vatuva's life was characterised by hard work and dedication to serve fellow human beings and his departure has not only been felt by his family and friends, but by many Namibians who have been following his work with admiration, from the early years of the country's independence.
“A man who had an obvious passion for building a better Namibia by enabling equitable access to services through good governance at the level of local government.
Today, we celebrate a life well lived and in service of our country. We pay tribute to a man who gave true meaning to what it means to be a servant of our country and her people,” he said.
Dedicated
Geingob said Vatuva played a crucial role in assisting the central government in dismantling apartheid Bantustans and setting up administrative structures in Oshana.
“Governor Vatuva will therefore be remembered for his immeasurable contribution to the development of Oshana Region in general, and Oshakati in particular,” the president said.
Former president Sam Nujoma shared the same sentiments as Geingob and said Vatuva was a dedicated and committed public servant who played an important role in setting up administrative structures and shaping the growth path of Oshana Region.
Vatuva was the founding governor of Oshana after independence, serving from 1992 to 1998.
He was also the first regional councillor for Oshakati East Constituency.
He is survived by his wife and children. He died at the age of 87 at a private hospital in the north on 1 September 2020.
