The third edition of the Okapya annual sport tournament will take place in December at the Eleven Morning Sport Field in Ondangwa.

The tournament, which usually attracts many teams from the northern regions, will provide entertainment between 24 and 28 December.

Youth football, veteran football and netball categories will be represented at the tourney.

Festive season fever

Tournament organiser Sandro Ithana says he expects a bigger and better tournament this year.

“The main aim of this tournament is to bring people together during the festive season because we believe this is the only way we can reduce the crime rate during the festive season, by keeping them busy with sport.

“The tournament has always been a success and we hope for that this time around too,” Ithana said.

History

The first edition of the tournament was held in 2018 and attracted 20 teams.

The event grew in 2019, attracting 28 teams of which 22 were ordinary and six were veteran teams.

“More than ten Namibia Premier League (NPL) players were spotted in action at last year's tournament.

“We are expecting that the 2020 tournament will attract more teams from all 14 regions.

“It is also the first time that we will have a netball category, which is a boost for the competition,” Ithana added.

Top Score, Atai Investment CC, Piyet Service, G2g Media, Akindaba Style, Onambula Investment Group, Kashipu Investment Cc, BusyBoys Namibia, Namibian Pound will be the sponsors of the competition.
