Festive season albums galore
As we steadily approach the festive season, tjil hones in on some new albums that we think will dominate the end-of-year festivities.
Whether your ear is refined for musicality first, tuned to hardcore lyricism or you are about that turn-up life, this month's album releases promise heat for every kind of music listener.
The cream of the crop of the Namibian music scene are set to release albums this weekend and next weekend. From Tate Buti, Top Cheri, Sally Boss Madam, Cassidy, DJ Chronic, Tulisan, Kp Illest, KK and more, here are the details you need to know about some of these albums…
80s Mercedes -
Cassidy Karon
What story do you tell on your first solo album? The album that will set the foundation for your solo career and either gain or lose listeners? Do you play it safe and tell the story of money, cars and girls, so as not to scare people with uncomfortable truths and sincerity, or do you tell a true story? Cassidy Karon from the award-winning duo Paradox has chosen the latter. He shares that the album has a general vintage feel, because it is heavily influenced by the 80s and 90s era. “The album is not boastful, but it is a confident album. It is a celebratory album and in the process I am declaring that I am the 80s Mercedes-Benz of this race. I I have come this far and will last another 30 years.
“If life was a race and we were all in our specific lanes, and in different cars driving towards somewhere, I would believe I would be in a 1982/3 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, because of the comfort, strength, reliability and class,” he said, adding these elements reflect in the music.
He will have an album release party today at the popular Experience Lounge & Cuisine. “The album itself will be out on most platforms at month-end. The rollout plan is we will first drop it exclusively on Donlu Africa; afterwards you will find it on other streaming platforms,” said Cassidy Karon.
Kings of Chronicles -
DJ Chronic
DJ Chronic has been having a fruitful year, from producing smash hits for other artists, winning best producer of the year at the Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAMAs), to now gearing up for the release his debut album.
In an interview with tjil DJ Chronic shared that the album will be out on the market on Friday, 29 November.
“This album features about 30 artists, so on average each song has about four artists on it.
“On top of uniting the music industry, I also want this album to introduce new talent to the market. I worked with both established and upcoming artists,” he said.
As a music producer, DJ Chronic mentioned that he is inspired by DJ Khaled's formula of marketing music.
“Personally, there are so many artists I only discovered after they were featured by DJ Khaled, and I wish to do the same also with my album. I want my album to give birth to new talent,” he said. Kings of Chronicles is available for pre-order.
Fimbi Fimbi - Tulisan
With two buzzing singles out already, the versatile Tulisan is set to release his second album this Monday.
Titled Fimbi Fimbi, Tulisan mentioned that the album is a blend of different sounds. “The title of the album was inspired by the art of changing colours. Tulisan isn't in a box and he is ready to take on any sound.
“The album also explores the art of survival in the music game, talks about my life and the overall subject matter appeals to all age groups,” he said.
Tulisan mentioned that the focus for now is on pushing the music online and the physical copies will be made available at a later stage. To complement the music and engage with his fans, Tulisan announced that an album tour is on the cards.
Lucky Girl –
Sally Boss Madam
Sally Boss Madam normally takes about two years to release an album. She last catered for us with a fully-fledged album in 2017 with the album My Black, which spawned several hits. On Saturday, 30 November the music star will host a launch party at The Garden Inn for her fourth studio album, Lucky Girl. Earlier this week the singer shared a single titled Hello featuring Tate Buti, a song that is already causing havoc in the streets. Lucky Girl is definitely one of the highly anticipated album releases of the year.
Speaking on the sound direction she took, the singer mentioned that Lucky Girl has a very urban sound and emphasised that it is going to sound different from her previous albums.
Faith & Favour -
Kp Illest
This album has been in the works for quite some times now, but the good news is that it is out today. In collaboration with Predator Energy, the rapper will have his album unveiling tonight at De Kayak. Judging from the singles so far Faith & Favour will be one of those albums that transcend the genre and puts music first and hip-hop thereafter.
“I want people to say Kp Illest as a hip-hop artist can compete with the likes of Gazza, King Tee Dee and Tate Buti. They don't make the same kind of music, but he is capable of competing with them,” said Kp Illest.
I Am No Regular Idol – KK
KK's I Am No Regular Idol is another highly anticipated album that drops tomorrow, exclusively on Donlu Africa. Even though he was part of many business ventures this year - from film to a bit of modelling - we are relieved that he did not entirely neglect the music hustle.
It is a 13-track album that will take us into the new sounds he has been exploring. If you are a follower of Namibian music, you would have noticed that he has been experimenting with different sounds, and we cannot wait to hear how the entire album sounds like.
