One of Namibia's top rugby clubs, Reho Falcon, have their sights set on developing talent in Rehoboth.

Last month, the club celebrated their 25th anniversary with an event in their hometown.

However, their focus for 2017 is not on the past but all about grooming future rugby stars.

Rehoboth is a town with much potential, but many of its young people get lost in a world of alcohol and drug abuse.

Reho Falcon chairman Heleon Beukes is motivated to turn the dreams and hopes of these youngsters into reality.

“So often pupils who have matriculated and have the ability to excel in sport fail to perform to their full potential due to a lack of training or academic shortfalls and drop out from the streams of success.

“This is worsened by the fact that parents can't afford university fees as many fail to qualify for grants or bursaries.

“Reho Falcon Rugby Club was established to address this specific gap in Rehoboth as it wishes to create a platform where talented rugby players can be identified and assisted.

“We are doing this by offering study assistance or employment instead of just exploiting youngsters to the benefit of clubs,” Beukes says.

The club has been one of the leading contributors of national sevens rugby players in Namibia, mainly because they recruit youngsters and educate them about the importance of sports.

“The club plans to use the sport code to further enhance skills and convince the youth to take up sport.

“We accommodate young, talented players and are optimistic about making a good impact in the premier league season for 2017.”

Reho Falcon's successful strategy has earned several of their players places in the national 15-man rugby team too.

Melric Africa, Ronaldo Pedro, Philippus Isaacs, Cliff Loubser, Deon Mouton, Eben Isaacs and Heini Bock have all featured for the national team. Others includes Denzil van Wyk, Attie Du Plessis, Tobie van Wyk, Collin de Koe and Desmond Snyders.

“We have identified various other social projects in the community which the club wishes to engage in order to add value to the community in which we operate.

“Two of these are the upgrading of the floodlights at the sport grounds and the completion of dressing rooms at Dr Lemmer High School.

“We currently use their sport facilities for practice as well as league matches,” Beukes says.

After 25 years of existence, it has become essential for the club to develop their own sports grounds in order to take rugby to the next level.

Beukes says other developments include improving the rugby field, netball court, table-tennis rooms, tennis courts, seminar venues and recreational facilities at the town.

Plans are also under way for the club to enter into agreements with companies.

“Through specialised and repetitive coaching the role of the academy is to develop the individual, both as a rugby player and as an individual.

“Through working on the skills, conditioning and decision-making we also help the player to understand his greater role in the team,” Beukes says.

Reho Falcon has established a strong rugby culture, and this is evident in the results they have achieved over the years.

The club has been a finalist and semi-finalist for the past nine years in the national league competition. In has also won a number of club tournaments over the past 25 years.

One of the club's major achievements was winning the Rapport Tournament back in 1995 when they defeated Blakes Rugby Club in Stellenbosch.

They were also the DStv Sevens League champions in 2005 and runners-up in the Namibia Breweries Club Championship in 2006.

In 2005 the club lost in the final of the Blakes Easter Tournament at Stellenbosch.
