Drugs, booze, cigarettes worth N$167k seized

Over the past few days, police in the Oshikoto Region have confiscated drugs, alcohol and cigarettes valued at more than N$167 000.
A 24-year-old man was arrested this past Saturday at the Tsumeb traffic checkpoint for contravening the Customs and Excise Act. Frans Fillipus Leonard was found in possession of 580 sachets of prohibited Angolan whiskey, which was intended for trading purposes.
Cannabis, whiskey
On Tuesday, a 55-year-old man was also arrested at the Tsumeb traffic checkpoint for being in possession of cannabis.
He was found with 16 parcels of cannabis weighing 1.74kg, valued at N$16 740.
In a separate incident, four people were fined N$2 000 each on Tuesday at the Tsumeb traffic checkpoint for being in possession of 3 240 Angolan whiskey sachets.
The street value of the sachets is N$32 400. They were fined for being in violation of regulation seven of stage two of the coronavirus state of emergency.
At the Oshivelo checkpoint on the B1 road, a 29-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for contravening the Customs and Excise Act.
Amon Shilongo was found in possession of 124 boxes of Yes cigarettes and 24 packets of Best whiskey.
The total value of these products is N$27 200.
In another incident on Monday, a 43-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested for contravening the Customs and Excise Act at the Oshivelo checkpoint.
The suspects were found in possession of 30 boxes of Yes cigarettes and six packets of Best whiskey, valued at N$45 000.
A 40-year-old woman was also arrested for contravening the Customs and Excise Act at the Oshivelo checkpoint on Tuesday.
She was found in possession of 370 packets of Best whiskey and 74 boxes of Yes cigarettes, valued at N$45 700.
“The smuggling of these illicit goods has increased and therefore the police wish to warn and/or caution the public to desist from these illegal and unlawful practices of smuggling illicit goods.
“Law enforcement officers will fight ruthlessly to detect and arrest all offenders and confiscate all illegal goods,” said police spokesperson, Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi.
