Multi award-winning rapper Diogene Ochs (32), better known as D-Jay, recently released his latest single, Pain, a collaboration with Rob E-Boy, also known as Robert Auchab.

In an interview with tjil, the Walvis Bay-based rapper, who won the best hip-hop accolades at the 2008 and 2009 Sanlam/NBC Music Awards, explained the concept of the song.

“I was watching the news a lot and I wasn't happy with a lot of the things taking place. I took my personal story and mixed it with everything that's going on. I've also been going through a few ups and downs just like everybody else and felt like it's time to connect with the people through this talent I have been given,” he said.

Pain is an inspirational song that narrates going through tough times, hoping to see the light. He emphasised that he wrote it to inspire. “Everyone can learn from my story. Everybody is going through something and this is just me letting you know that dark days aren't forever,” said D-Jay.

The single was produced by Ricardo Hoeseb, better known as Rich Eagle, and is available online. The track has also been submitted to local radio stations countrywide.

“This song means a lot to me. I've been going back and forth about this whole music thing. It's something I love but the way the industry is shaped at the moment is a bit disappointing. I grew up in it and always wanted the best for everyone in it.

“I guess it's just me showing growth as usual. I try to get personal in my songs. These are real life situations that we go through but not all of us have that voice to share it with the masses. That's where we, the artists, have the upper hand. People listen and will feel it when it hits them,” said D-Jay. According to the rapper, who is signed under Dragan 'Antonio' Djokic's Deal Done Recordz, a good collaboration needs the right people and the right beat.

The Listen to Your Heart hitmaker plans to shoot a music video for the new track as he feels that he would let his fans down if he didn't.

“I've already received a few calls from a few talented directors so the show must go on. I have a good feeling about this and I haven't had this feeling in years.” The rapper released his first album, Game Over, in 2009 and followed it with Favourite Rapper in 2010, before his long-awaited Champion: The Gift and the Curse dropped in 2019.

D-Jay has shared the stage with the likes of Teargas, Mandoza, Davido, Jozi, the late HHP, JR, Bleksem, Zola and AKA, among many others.
