Craven aims for third win
One of the most prestigious cycling events, the 2020 Nedbank Cycle Challenge, is set to take place this Sunday in Windhoek, with last year's winner Dan Craven hoping to bag a hat-trick.
Cycling ace Craven, who won last year's 100km challenge as well as the 2018 race, will this year defend his title in the 35th edition against a crop of strong contenders. The event attracted close to 900 cyclists last year, braving distances of 20km, 30km, 60km and the massive 100km.
Craven beat off competition from South African rider Nolan Hoffman, who was a guest rider for the NCCS Pro Cycling team, winning in a time of two hours, 26 minutes and 19 seconds (02:26:19), while Hoffman managed a time of 02:26:20. Alex Miller finished the race in third place with a time of 02:26:20.
“I had good races so far and I'm looking forward to this year's race,” said Craven. The cyclist earlier this month took second spot in the Nedbank WPP series after Miller.
Last year's 100km women's division was won by Vera Adrian. She will however not be competing this year as she's out of the country, but wished the cyclists a pleasant ride.
Adrian beat Michelle Vorster in a time of 02:53:05 last year. Genevieve Weber finished in third with a time of 03:03:40.
With Adrian's absence, there is room for a new champion. Vorster will take on the 100km race fresh off the Nedbank WPP series, which she won.
The Nedbank Cycle Challenge starts at Zoo Park, with riders cycling along Independence Avenue, before joining Hosea Kutako Drive all the way to the Western Bypass. They will turn back at the Döbra turn-off to Brakwater before rejoining the bypass at the weighbridge.
The route will take them to Sam Nujoma Drive, where they continue up to Matchless Mine and make a U-turn to rejoin the bypass once again before retracing their steps to Zoo Park via Independence Avenue to finish the race.
