Cosafa membership paid
The Fifa Normalisation Committee (NC) said it has paid the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa) members fees which barred them from attending the 2020 annual general meeting held on 25 January.
Namibia, as well as neighbours Zimbabwe and Angola, were barred from the meeting as they owed unspecified amounts in membership fees, which NC Chairperson Hilda Basson-Namundjebo said were in small amounts. “Everything has been cleared up as we paid,” she said.
Failing to pay the membership dues means that Namibia would have lost all rights and privileges in Cosafa in terms of Article 27.6.
This further means that, as a member association, the country would have been liable for suspension by the executive committee, and be liable for penalties to be imposed by the committee.
The Cosafa was established by the Supreme Council of Sports in Africa – Zone 6 in 1997. It brings together 14 nations in southern Africa under a single umbrella, with the goal of developing football in African nations in the southern hemisphere.
Cosafa hosts tournaments like the women's and men's under-17, women's and men's senior and women's and men's under-20 championships.
There is also hope that a women's under-17 beach soccer tournament as well as a men's futsal competition are being considered.
