Cops probe deaths
A high number of people died in less than a week, mostly in accidents and as a result of murder.
The Namibian police are investigating the deaths of 18 people who died in less than a week.
Of these, 15 people died in road accidents, two women were killed by their male companions, and one man was stabbed to death during an argument.
The Namibian police's weekly crime report states that six people died in a collision 50 km from Usakos last Wednesday, including a grandmother, her daughter and two of her grand-daughters aged eight and one.
On Friday, a driver lost control of a Nissan station wagon between Outjo and Kamanjab, which cost the lives of another six persons, including three children.
The police furthermore opened three cases of culpable homicide involving pedestrians who were hit by cars over the weekend.
On Saturday, Fransika Eises (15) was killed in a hit-and-run at Okahandja. The driver hit another vehicle when he tried to flee the scene in his car, and then rammed into a house. He left the vehicle and ran away while the deceased was dying on the street. No arrest has been made yet, but a case of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and failure to ascertain the nature and extent of injuries has been opened.
Another culpable homicide case was opened on Saturday at Okakarara, where Mokahurua Tjikurame (24) was killed when an unlicensed driver overturned a car.
Another woman was killed when a red Mercedes truck belonging to the Omuthiya town council drove into her while she was crossing the road between Omuthiya and Ondangwa over the weekend.
Police are also investigating two domestic murder cases, one involving a 31-year-old woman who died in Oshakati on Saturday, allegedly at the hands of her 31-year-old boyfriend who fled, but was arrested on Sunday.
The police are also investigating the murder of Hanguwo Otiilie Mwatteuvi (36) whose 54-year-old boyfriend allegedly slit her throat on Sunday afternoon.
A case of murder was opened at Karasburg following the death of John Matroos (28) who died from a stab wound. A 25-year-old suspect was arrested. It is alleged the two men fought after the deceased allegedly beat the suspect's child.
A case of rape involving a minor was opened on Tuesday last week, when a 12-year-old girl at Mupini village in the Kavango West region accused a 49-year-old man of raping her. The suspect was arrested and was due to appear at the Rundu magistrate court on Monday.
Two men were arrested over the weekend at Walvis Bay, after they were found in possession of two elephant tusks. The men, aged 47 and 51 years old, were busted when they tried to sell the tusks to undercover police detectives during a joint sting operation with members of the Blue Rhino task team. Both remain in custody.
A man was arrested after a mother (28) and her one-year-old child fell from the vehicle he was driving and he neglected to stop and render assistance. Both were taken to hospital in Omuthiya.
