Namibian international Zenatha Coleman ranked ninth on ESPN’s African women footballers’ list for December.
The Brave Gladiators captain plies her trade for Sevilla in Spain and scored twice for her club in November.
Though she was not as prolific in December, the footballer continues to feature prominently.
Coleman came off the bench in their first three matches of November as Sevilla lost 5-2 to Real Madrid and 1-0 to Eibar before a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad.
The team fared much better when Coleman started in their next three matches. Although they were thumped 6-0 by runaway league leaders Barcelona, that disappointment was sandwiched between a 1-0 victory over Levante and a 2-1 triumph against Granadilla Tenerife.
Sevilla is currently eighth in the 18-team league with 19 points and will be back in Primera División action tomorrow against Real Betis.
‘Grateful’
While she wrote on Twitter that she was grateful about the achievement, Coleman did not respond to Namibian Sun queries regarding her ranking before going to print.
The 27-year-old started with Zaragoza in 2018 after arriving in Spain from Lithuanian side Gintra Universitetas, where she scored 110 goals in 31 games and had her first taste of the Women’s Champions League.
She then joined Valencia, scoring 11 goals in 42 appearances during her two-year stint at the club.
During her first season, she scored seven goals in 24 matches, and was nominated for the Player of the Week award twice. In her second outing, she netted four times in 21 appearances.
Oshoala dominates
Despite Coleman’s achievements, the show belongs to Nigerian Asisat Oshoala of Barcelona, who tops the list. She has played 10 matches, scoring nine goals, and has two assists.
In second place is South African footballer Thembi Kgatlana, who plays for Eibar. In total she has played 11 matches, has five goals - two of which she picked up in December – and has four assists.
The third spot is enjoyed by Cameroonian Ajara Nchout of Valerenga, who has a total of nine goals from 18 matches.
Another South African, Refiloe Jane (AC Milan) is in fourth with one goal in eight matches.
The fifth spot on the list is owned by Cameroonian Marie-Aurelle Awona of Stade de Reims. Awona was one of three Cameroon players recognised in the International Federation of Football History and Statistics African Team of the Year 2020.
The list is rounded out with Portuguese club Sporting Braga’s Jermaine Seoposenwe in sixth, Dijon’s Elodie Nakkach in seventh and Easther Mayi Kith, who plies her trade for Stade de Reims, in eighth, while French-Algerian attacker Sylia Koui of Le Havre sits pretty in the 10th spot.
