Challenges in agri sector can be overcome
Agriculture minister Alpheus !Naruseb said the challenges facing the agriculture sector can be overcome with commitment, dedication and a conscious approach.
Addressing ministry staff and representatives of state-owned enterprises falling under the ministry on Monday, !Naruseb said that more than 70% of Namibians derive their livelihood from agriculture and therefore the rendering of efficient and effective services to them is crucial.
“The challenges that confront our people, whether in the form of armyworms, access to water infrastructure or finding markets for their agricultural produce can all be overcome with your efforts, commitment, dedication and conscious approach,” he told staff members.
He said the ministry should make sure that the efforts of people in the agriculture sector are viable to sustain themselves and that the ministry should be ready at all times to render much-needed services.
!Naruseb further stressed that whatever activities are being implemented this year by the ministry must have a meaningful impact on the intended beneficiaries.
He said this is of utmost importance, taking into account the limited resources at the ministry's disposal.
“Optimal utilisation of resources, be it financial, human capital, materials and supplies, moveable or immovable assets must at all times be observed. All resources at our disposal in our various capacities must be deployed and utilised for the benefits of the government and its populace.”
The government had introduced various public policy initiatives since independence with the objective of reforming public service delivery, he said.
According to him, the various public policy initiatives aimed to deliver an effective and efficient service to the nation, and to contribute to Namibia's socio-economic advancement.
He said some of these policy initiatives were the introduction of a performance management system and business process re-engineering.
“Given the prevailing situation where we are confronted with limited resources and the challenges of drought brought about by climate challenges, I urge you to come up with innovative ways and not to continue the business-as-usual approach to enable us to make an impact in the lives of our people,” he said.
!Naruseb added that staff members should apply business techniques that focus on customer-service-oriented processes aiming at eliminating customer complaints and also develop transparency throughout the operational level to reduce capital and operational costs.
