Bernd Pfänder is the brewing manager at AB-InBev Namibia. He has been a brewer since 2005 and the passion for beer has been with him even before the time he became a brewer. Pfänder mentions having been with a competing brewer for 13 years and after having joined AB InBev Namibia, he can only say it is a massive journey which he wants to be part of for the rest of his career because of the values AB-InBev upholds and the people he gets to work with.

“My job is about brewing the best beer at the highest level of our global quality standards every time and delivering the best consumer experience,” Pfänder says. The delivery and availability of the best beer is his and the team’s top priority.

Their biggest challenge is getting a bigger piece of the pie in the market share in Namibia as the competition is strong. “But at AB InBev Namibia, we welcome competition as it makes us stretch even further to deliver better,” he adds.

His biggest accomplishment is the quality of the beers produced. Together with the whole brewing team, they have managed to improve the quality of the Welwitschia beer in not only its taste but giving the beer its luxurious mouth feel from 2018 every year onwards.

A typical day in the office is extremely hectic. AB InBev has strict routines called MCRS which is basically a routine system followed in order to get all information needed for the plant to run nicely channelled from the morning to the afternoon and to ensure all stakeholders are informed of the current situation concerning the quality of the beer and its production. Bernd also has an engagement session with the Shopfloor team daily to ensure that everyone is safe and that the plant is in great condition, ready for beer production.

“I have a great love for competition as it encourages me to be my best and being recognised for it. What inspires me is the constant knowledge that at AB InBev, we are in competition with ourselves and I would like our Welwitschia Brewery in Okahandja to be the number one Brewery in Southern Africa which we were for six months in a row during 2019.”

His future plans include mastering his current position as brewing manager to be able to move on to being plant manager or Africa brewery co-ordinator to support different breweries within the region. The end-goal is to help entrench Voyager Plant Optimisation systems, which is the way we work in Ab-InBev to make their jobs easier and much more efficient.
