Breakfast is as critical to learning as are pencils or textbooks
We know that children cannot learn or thrive in school if they are always hungry. Still, all over Namibia, thousands of children go to school on an empty stomach, let alone with a packed lunch. That is why during the past few years, Alexander Forbes Financial Services has been providing some relief by supporting Beautiful Kidz Educational Centre with monthly donations towards their soup kitchen.
Over 100 children aged between three and six years receive daily meals at the centre. The food enables the children to learn better, which gives them a strong foundation on which they can build their future. The support from Alexander Forbes ensures the children have a brighter future as they will eventually become productive citizens contributing to the future of the country.
Over the past four years Alexander Forbes has invested almost N$500 000 in the well-being of children in vulnerable communities. We commend them for that.
Jennieke Kafuka-Boiler, Beautiful Kidz project manager: “Many children are benefiting from this support and we can see how it positively influences their lives. After three years they leave our school much stronger and healthier than when they came. All the children we support thanks to the donations of Alexander Forbes are in good health and we are grateful for that.”
Two of these children are Salomao and Hanna. They are four and five years old respectively. They are blessed to have a mother who is responsible and shows affection to her children. Although their mother cares a lot, she has struggled in life and due to unemployment, she is unable to provide food for her children. Her life has been difficult and she has had to make tough choices, just to survive. Being able to feed Salomao and Hanna has saved them from malnutrition and gives them a fair chance to develop in a healthy manner.
Then there is Clevery, till about a few weeks ago she, her mother and her sibling lived in a tiny bird coop of about a metre high, sharing the space at night with birds who freely fly in and out. Then even this little bird coop burned down, leaving them with nothing. At the moment they are hosted by a friend but are not sure where they will be in the long term. Food for them is a luxury which they do not have every day. Clevery’s mother is relieved knowing her daughter gets taken care of on a daily basis and is able to learn and grow.
Through feeding programmes kids learn more, and are stronger, smarter and healthier. That leads to stronger, smarter, healthier schools and stronger, smarter healthier communities. It really has a multiplier effect on the whole community.
