The first-ever Red Bull Foreign Bars competition which took place on 24 March in Windhoek was a challenge enjoyed by many at the Auas Valley shopping centre.

With exciting tricks and spins, the competition saw both amateur and professional BMX riders competing against each other in a unique competition of skill and grit.

Over ten amateurs and six professionals competed in the competition which aimed to bring together riders to help grow the BMX community and kick-start a new BMX event.

The competition commenced with participants riding their own BMX bikes first and showing their amazing skills.

Those who impressed made it through to the finals and then competed on a BMX bike completely unfamiliar to them.

The event was hosted by Eric Garbers, Namibia's only Red Bull athlete, who also created the whole concept.

Nigel Sheffers walked away with the first prize in the amateur class, followed by Pascal Maritz in second place, while third place went to Gilbert Schiebler.

Micka von Bentheim was the winner in the expert class. Robert van der Westhuisen came second and Michael Barlow third.

The winners took home brand new BMX bikes as grand prizes. In the amateur class, the winner walked away with a slick Eastern Frame BMX bike and in the expert class it was an impressive WeThePeople Reason BMX bike.

In a media statement the organising team thanked everyone who supported the event.

“Thank you to all that came out on the day to support the BMX athletes and see their tricks they could achieve and inspire new fans to take up the sport.

“Also a special thank you to the partner sponsors of this event: RocoMamas, Radiowave, Edelstahlbau and Prostudio.

“We would also like to thank the judges: Murray Loubser - Red Bull athlete SA, Karl-Heinz and Garbers,” the statement said.
