Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) chief administrator Freddy Mwiya says their operations will improve in 2019.

The NSC has its sights set on implementing its strategic plan and initiatives that can encapsulate their vision to foster sporting excellence in Namibia.

“In 2018, we were focused on the positives that would cause our great country to excel in sport, but there were, however, also challenges.

“As anticipated, by the 2017 to 2019 sport review, one of our greatest challenges lied in governance, the lack of adequate funding and the lack of access to sport infrastructure,” Mwiya said.

Mwiya also noted that they want to put an end to infighting among sport administrators.

The NSC further wants the abolishment of tribalism, racism and discrimination in Namibian sport.

“Professionalising sporting initiatives and grassroots development programmes have become our next challenges.

“The goals being to attract and retain our sport stakeholders and volunteers, and ensure that good governance and risk management takes centre stage at all levels of sport in the country,” he said.

The commission also wants to develop a collaborative approach between their stakeholders, in order to come up with a funding model that will supplement government efforts and allow self-sustainability and financial independence.

“To be clear, the sporting domain has a bright future in Namibia and we as leaders should have the willingness to see things through to fruition.

“As with anything in life, those who align themselves with a set of goals, and work within the system and contribute the most and also generally, achieve the most with sport.”

The commission further lauded all its stakeholders, including the ministry of sport, for having worked together during 2018.

Mwiya said they are grateful to their sponsors, suppliers and the NSC board of commissioners and staff.
