Because happiness matters

He is one of Namibia’s most talented artists who has a lot of passion for what he does and nobody can deny it. It’s so visible in his effortless smooth voice, and even if he’s singing in his vernacular, you sort of immediately get to understand all the lyrics when the words reach your ears. He has also scooped a couple of awards from the NAMAs including most disciplined artist and with four albums out thus far, there’s no stopping for this happy chap. Dixon, whose birth name is Daniel Nasou, chit chats with tjil about his latest achievements gives out a little info about himself. Indeed, he is such a charmer.


You recently released an album titled Happy Place, what is the story behind the title?
The album was titled Happy Place which is basically me telling a story of finding positivity in any circumstance in life. The album begins with sad songs and then moves into happy, up-tempo dance songs, depicting life gradually becoming better. I am therefore encouraging the youth, or anybody for that matter, to keep working hard towards their dreams.


Dixon is a proud Damara. What does it mean to you singing in your language and how do your fans take it?
It makes it a bit easier for me to express myself plus is gives a bit of identity to my music. I have however over the years realised that I am getting lot of support from all over the country especially from Ongwediva and that’s what sparked the idea of singing other Namibian languages - like on the song Owambo Girl on my previous album Strong, as well as the song I Love You on Happy Place. My aim is to represent the entire Namibian nation so you might hear me singing in more languages on my next project.


You featured international artist Cleo Ice Queen on a song titled Get Lit. What is the song about and will there be a music video out?
I initially wanted to do the complete album alone until such a time that the beat on two of the songs drove me to collaborate with the very talented Zambian female rapper Cleo Ice Queen and Namibia’s very own rapper Kp Illest who both did justice to what I was intending to accomplish with the songs. I did Get Lit with Cleo Ice Queen which is a party song and Ain’t Backing Down with Kp Illest which is a motivational song. Talking about videos my team just likes doing things without announcing so it’s best to keep a good eye or ear on Dixon.


Will you invite her to Namibia for a performance some time?
Absolutely, we are planning to have her come over to the motherland and both our labels, Ultimate Rhythm Entertainment and Kamikasi Entertainment are open for other future endeavours, so the world must just watch this space.

Will there be music videos and tours for the album?
All I can say is that my team and I are going all out on this album and as you already know we just had the most beautiful album release concert at Zoo Park on 27 May. There are more great things to come.


You are very active on social media - is it a marketing strategy or do you really like engaging fans?
Well, most Namibians are on Facebook which is currently my strongest social media platform. I see fans coming through from the neighbouring countries such as Botswana and Zambia as well especially after I dropped the Ti Xun video lifted from my previous album Strong. My Facebook page DIXON NA is basically where my fans engage and also get my latest updates whether it’s new music, upcoming shows, videos, collaborations, or any other news.


What are you currently working on?
I am working on new material as well as promoting Happy Place. Get Lit is already starting to get massive airplay outside Namibia on TransAfrica Radio in South Africa. I am positive that this album will gradually go far and lift the Namibian flag high.


You are hot. What is your workout routine and what do you eat?
Well, I eat pap, drink a lot of water and hit the gym


Is there love in paradise or..?
There is always love all around for me from my family and fans.
