Athletics Namibia elects new executives

Cindy Van Wyk
Athletics Namibia held their special elective congress on 29 February at Arebbusch Travel Lodge in Windhoek, with Erwin Naimhwaka remaining president.

The national athletics federation was set to have its elective congress in November, but took a resolution at their annual general meeting to hold it earlier due to the restructuring of executive positions.

Member regions affiliated to the federation – Khomas, Erongo, Ohangwena, Hardap, Oshana, Oshikoto, Kavango East and Omaheke – sent delegates who had voting power to the congress.

Naimhwaka stood unopposed and was elected overwhelmingly by all delegates.

The new executive elected therefore is: Naimhwaka (president), Leon Nienaber (vice-president), Madeleine Kotze (secretary-general), Leorine Waggie (finance), Betholdt Karumentu (track and field), Robert Kaxuxwena (road running), Remigius Iiyambo (cross country and mountain running), Corlia Maritz (technical officials), Louis Cloete (coaching), Modestus Mwila (selection), Edward Kapewasha (publicity) and Charlton Rickerts (medical and anti-doping).

The congress was also attended by Freddy Mwiya, the chief administrative officer of the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), as well as Abner Xoagub, the president of the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC).

Mwiya congratulated the new executive members and called on them to work together by supporting the federation's president. He also urged the federation to revisit their formula to reach all regions and to develop the code in all 14 regions. The NNOC president called on the federation to work hand-in-hand with them and to apply for funding for talent identification programmes offered by the NNOC annually.

In his acceptance speech, Naimwaka indicated that the federation will hold an induction workshop for the new executives to define the roles of the different portfolios.

He stressed that the federation continues to operate with financial challenges. He further reminded the new executive to serve the nation to the best of their abilities despite being there on a voluntarily basis.
