African Personal Services (APS) has vowed to remain on guard of the coronavirus as they host cricket matches together with Cricket Namibia (CN) this coming weekend.
Just last week, the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) put schools' sports events on a halt due to the increase of coronavirus cases in the country. The commission, however, gave the green light to social leagues and some non-contact sports to continue under strict regulations.
It is against this background APS and CN have planned matches for this Saturday and Sunday.
Strict measures in place
The first matches will be played on Saturday morning at the United Sport Field in Windhoek, and will see six-a-side teams in action as a curtain-raiser for a national team inter-squad match. “We have everything in place as far as safety regulations are concerned and the games will continue as planned. “The first games will be the under-9,10 and 11 teams playing six-a-side before the national team plays a T20 match,” Annemarie de Villiers from APS said. The games will continue on Sunday at the Wanderers Sports Field with six-a-side under-12 and under-13 action. The national squad will then close off the weekend with a 50-over inter-squad match at Wanderers.
Crowds controlled
“We will also make sure that there are less than 100 people allowed to enter the premises and that everyone is sanitised upon entry.
“The good thing is that we have been in constant communication with the NSC,” De Villiers said.
APS Cricket was established in 2016 with the vision to develop junior cricket in Namibia. The team's dream is to provide players of all age groups with ample opportunity to play competitive games, giving them enough exposure throughout the year to perform competitively and at the required standard during the official schools league.
