Alleged wife killer remains behind bars

Accused of murdering his wife last month, Coenraad ‘Coenie’ Strydom (45) made a second appearance in the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Magistrate John Sindano postponed the matter to 26 January 2022 for further investigation on the request of state prosecutor Annakleta Kandjimi, who said there are two statements still outstanding.
Strydom’s new lawyer, Evert Gous, said it boils down to two statements and forensics. He was previously represented by Lana Fouche.
“The date is set down for 26 January for investigations and possibly bail application, but that may not necessarily be the date. We are still discussing,” Gous said, while Sindano remanded the accused in custody.
Alleged suicide
It is alleged that Strydom shot his wife – 49-year-old Engela Strydom - in the head with a 9mm firearm on 4 November between 20:00 and 21:00 at their home in Vaughan Webster Street, Meersig.
After the shooting, the victim was attended to by paramedics and taken to hospital under the guise that she had committed suicide.
Preliminary investigations by the police however indicated that the deceased was shot from behind. The weapon was found hidden under a pillow, while four spent cartridges were also discovered at the crime scene.
The unit commander for community affairs in the Erongo Region, inspector Ileni Shapumba, confirmed this at the time.
The couple tied the knot in July. A mother of two, the deceased owned Sefco Property Managers in Walvis Bay and had been a real estate agent since 1994.
