Airport upgrades won't affect operations
The Namibia Airports Company (NAC) has reiterated that the planned upgrades and construction of additional facilities at Hosea Kutako International Airport should not affect the functionality of the facility.
NAC spokesperson Dan Kamati said an earlier media briefing had emphasised this.
“We will have temporary expansions of the current facility in certain key areas, namely the check-in hall, security screening point, arrivals hall and the luggage handling areas,” Kamati had said during the earlier briefing at the airport.
“These are all temporary improvements, at most useful for the next five years. Our immediate preoccupation is to resolve the congestion and resultant compliance issues in the short-term.”
In the interim, improvements will include increasing security screening desks from two to four, increasing immigration counters from four to six counters and adding a third luggage carousel area.
Expansion plans include 12 extra check-in points in the departures section, for a total of 26.
Eight security control positions will be added to the existing two, and three extra passport control positions will be added, bringing the total to seven, while a new runway may also be constructed.
Twenty passport control positions will be added at arrivals, for a total of 30. One luggage claim section will be added, as well as two control positions. The Chinese government had recently also voiced its desire to fund the construction and upgrade of the airport during the just-ended Forum for Africa China Cooperation summit.
It is estimated that the upgrades and refurbishments will cost about N$5 billion.
