The owner of the African Connection (AC) Boxing and Fitness Academy, Immanuel ‘Imms’ Moses, held a successful boxing tournament in Windhoek’s Northern Industrial Area on Saturday in order to prepare boxers for Algeria.

The youth team will represent Namibia at the All-Africa Youth Games in Algeria on 19 July.

Two junior bouts and four senior bouts took place during the tournament, while the national youth team featured in five bouts.

In the junior’s bout Rebelo Doeseb beat compatriot from the After School Centre (ASC) Kapembe Panduleni, while Gabriel Shapange from AC lost to Johannes ‘45’ Gideon of ASC.

In the seniors bouts, Petrus Shikondi of 21 Brigade (21 BDE) lost to Zhunga Mbeha of AC.

Sililo Armstrong of 21 BDE won his bout after his opponent Alex Ndahulapo failed to show up, while Martin Mukungu of ASC beat Robert Ndalelwa of AC.

Riaan Rispel of AC beat Gabriel Ashipala of 21 BDE via a technical knockout.

The national youth team produced exciting bouts, as all the five boxers won their bouts convincingly.

Hafeni Joseph beat Lean Gawanab of ASC 2-1 in the 52kg weight division, while Matheus Ngesheya beat Robert Hubertos of ASC by the same point’s margin in the 60kg division.

Davis Amukongo, who many tout as a medal hopeful, also beat Naftal Naftal of ASC by 2-1 in the 49kg division, while another medal hopeful Johannes Trofinus was dominant in dispatching Oswan Johannes of ASC by a 3-0 margin in the same division.

Crowd favourite and potential medal winner at the All-Africa Games, Flame Nangolo also entertained the crowd when he defeated Tomas Tyson of ASC 2-1 in the 56kg weight category.

Moses, the organiser of the tournament, said he was happy with the outcome, as the objective was to give the youth team a chance to assess their readiness.

“The event was a success and it was well attended. The fans were treated to exciting boxing by the youngsters. We saw what they can offer. The coaches now know what to improve,” he added.

Namibian youth boxers, he stressed, are unfortunate as they do not have a chance to have a training camp due to lack of finances, amongst other reasons.

“The travelling coaches now have an easy task to prepare these boys for their fights in Algeria, as the clubs have already done a lot with these boxers,” he added.
