A thirst for recreation
It is now history that boxing fans flocked to the Maxwilili Community Hall in the Hakahana settlement of Katutura last Saturday.
The Olympic-style amateur tournament was the second to be hosted by Warriors Promotions in the informal settlements of Windhoek.
With very little room to move around and children finding innovative – although at times dangerous - ways to catch the action, the event was undeniably successful.
The organisers and supervisors of the fights - the Khomas Boxing Federation (KBF) - expressed great happiness at the turnout.
But while all were happy, the turnout did expose the need for better infrastructure in those areas.
“I hope the councillors see that the communities need bigger halls,” said KBF chairperson Jason ‘Taks’ Naule on the sidelines of the event.
Warriors Promotions’ Ludwig Haimbodi added that the turnout is evidence that more recreational facilities are needed in the area.
“All of my boxers have to walk quite far to get to our gym at the Katutura Youth Complex, even though they are all from these informal settlements.
“Imagine how many more boxers we would get if the gym was a little nearer to them,” he added.
The promoter and trainer said he hoped that they’ll be able to host a few more tournaments before the year is over.
“We even had boxers from places like Usakos and Oranjemund fighting here. So it is growing slowly but surely,” he said.
