From humble beginnings to the forefront of media production, 27-year-old Castro Shali Kaleni Uulumbu serves as an inspiration to many aspiring journalists across the nation, especially those from the northern parts of Namibia. His educational journey began at Lano Private School in Onayena, where he laid the groundwork for his academic pursuits.

His quest for knowledge led him to Tsumeb, where he completed primary school at Francis Galton and high school at Etosha, culminating in the successful attainment of his grade 12 certificate. Fuelled by a passion for media and technology, Uulumbu furthered his studies at the College of the Arts, earning a diploma in media and technology with a specialisation in television production - a pivotal milestone in his journey towards professional excellence.

The dawn of Uulumbu's career illuminated the Namibian media landscape in 2019 when he joined One Africa Television as a sports journalist, igniting a spark that would fuel his trajectory in the industry. Over three years and 10 months, he carved a niche for himself, captivating audiences with his insightful coverage and unparalleled dedication to the craft.

However, his quest for growth and diversification saw him embarking on a new chapter, transitioning to the realm of social media management and marketing at PstBet, a prominent brand in the country, from November 2022 to March 2024.

Last month marked the inception of a new chapter in Uulumbu's career as he assumed the role of sports producer at the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), a testament to his unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation.

Meticulous planning and creative execution

A typical day in Uulumbu's professional domain is a symphony of meticulous planning and creative execution. As a sports producer, he orchestrates the compilation of daily stories for NBC's Sport News Bulletin, leveraging his expertise to craft compelling narratives that resonate with audiences far and wide.

What sets him apart is not just his technical prowess, but his innate attributes of proactivity, dedication and unwavering commitment to his craft. These qualities have propelled him to greater heights, earning him accolades and recognition within the industry. From introducing the sports segment on One Africa Television to receiving awards for visual media excellence and earning prestigious nominations at the Namibia Annual Sports Awards (NASA) and the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), Uulumbu's journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance.

"In 2021, I received an award for the best visual media at the Namibia Football Association Girls Bounce Back Cup Competition, sponsored by Skorpion Zinc. The same year and the following year, I was nominated in the Sports Broadcast Journalism Award category at NASA. In 2022, I achieved a milestone when I was ranked sixth in Africa by AIPS in the Young Sports Broadcast (Video and Audio) category."

Yet, amidst the accolades and achievements lies a stark reality - the pervasive challenge of obtaining timely information and interviews, a hurdle that plagues many in the industry. However, Uulumbu's resolve remains unyielding, driven by a singular vision of elevating sports journalism in Namibia and beyond.

To those embarking on a similar path, his advice rings true: Be dedicated, creative, committed and proactive. In an ever-evolving industry, these qualities serve as guiding beacons, illuminating the path to success and fulfillment.
