A journey of growth and success at Sanlam
Balancing career and family
In terms of advice for young individuals aspiring to enter the industry, Sanlam's Chantel Feris encourages them to take things at their own pace and find genuine enjoyment in their work.
Chantel Feris has held four different positions since she started working at Sanlam, where she has worked for almost nine years.
Feris entered the insurance industry thirteen years ago and currently serves as an affluent claims consultant at Sanlam. Her role involves completing claims for various businesses, including funeral and life cover, as well as risk benefit policy claims.
When Feris initially joined Sanlam, she faced significant challenges, such as adapting to a different working pace and an unfamiliar corporate culture.
Rewarding journey
It was a busy period of her life, as she had recently become a mother and had gotten married. Regardless, she says it was a very rewarding change and a great journey.
Apart from occasional meetings, the majority of her day is spent at her desk, liaising with clients and agents via email and telephone.
Feris says her family serves as a source of inspiration and motivation for her.
Encouraging young people who aim to enter the industry, Feris emphasises the importance of maintaining focus and avoiding comparisons with peers.
"Take things at your own pace and really enjoy what you do, otherwise, you won’t reap the rewards of your labour. Prioritise your mental and physical health," she says.
Determined
Acquiring success in her career is a priority.
Although she envisions a better future for her career, she acknowledges that nothing is set in stone and that change is inevitable. Her goal is to take on a more senior role at Sanlam in the foreseeable future.
On her journey to attain her goals, Feris says her biggest fear is stagnation – not being willing to grow and change for the better.
She says feeling well-balanced at work and at home is important.
"I feel content and confident within myself and my abilities. I have a happy family life," she explains.
In addition to growth, Feris wishes to see improvements in society.
She says if she could, she would eliminate poverty from society.
"A lot of us would accomplish so much more in our society if we weren’t limited financially; the world would be a happier place, and that’s why I love working at Sanlam; we give people an opportunity to secure a better financial future for themselves and their loved ones.”
