Keeping abreast of new tech and threats
Cyber security specialist Jackson Nghidulika envisions great advancements in the operations of Namcave, where he was recently appointed on a permanent basis.
Jackson Nghidulika, who started working at Namcave as an independent contractor, was recently appointed as their new cyber specialist, effective 1 March.
Nghidulika is a coder and developer and has won numerous first-place awards with the Namibia University of Science and Technology's (NUST's) annual cyber security competition.
In addition, he has participated in various online hacking competitions on platforms like SANREN, Hacking Lab, VMware bug bounty, and Cybrary. He said that even though he only got hired full-time recently, he enjoys his job and that it allows him flexibility and mobility.
Namcave is an online marketplace connecting buyers and sellers.
Nghidulika said that staying up-to-date is one of his strong suits, and it helps keep Namcave abreast of all emerging technologies and new threats.
"With vulnerabilities building up every day, one cannot trust the system to be 100% secured. I thus constantly keep an eye out for any possible vulnerabilities and terminate them accordingly."
Nghidulika urged the youth to use the internet for important things, and said they should take the initiative to enrich themselves with skills and knowledge in a world where unemployment is ubiquitous.
Roles and responsibilities
He said that Namacve grants him the chance to refine and utilise his expertise in line with his profession.
It ensures his skills are perpetually enhanced with the latest technology and infrastructure.
"This is how one stays relevant in the information technology (IT) world. It is truly a dream come true."
During his time with Namcave, he envisions great advancements in their operations and diversity. He said he would love to see his team grow and reach greater heights.
As Namcave’s cyber specialist, a profession he believes is still new in Namibia, he is responsible for the technical aspects at the company.
He makes sure all technologies are up-to-date for security purposes. He ensures they are running in safe mode and are not vulnerable to third parties with malicious intent. He said that he also performs penetrating testing, vulnerability assessment, threat intelligence, modelling, real-time security checks, data integrity, and confidentiality.
Dedication
Nghidulika studied cyber security at NUST and is part of their cyber security team, where they train alongside senior students. He said that they paved the way and prevented them from starting from scratch.
"With great mentorship and curiosity in my first year, I accumulated and grasped as much theoretical and practical knowledge as was at my disposal."
Before joining Namcave, he worked with Lighthouse Finance, Taida Financial Consulting, and Rennies Logistics. Although his job description was not always in line with his profession, he said he still performed security actions. In addition to rendering advice and recommendations, he delivers consulting work for small companies and works on a few personal projects.
