Unam: Over 5 000 graduate in 2022
The University of Namibia (Unam) held its second graduation for the year last week at the university's main campus. On the day, 1 054 students successfully obtained their qualifications.
A total of 1 054 students graduated from the University of Namibia last week. The institution’s second graduation ceremony for the year saw 14 graduates receiving PhDs, 121 receiving masters and two receiving honourary doctorates, while 917 graduates obtained undergraduate degrees, certificates and diplomas.
These students added to the graduation that took place earlier this year, where 4 779 students obtained qualifications, bringing the university’s total to 5 833 graduates for the year.
This is the highest number of graduates the university has seen in one year, vice chancellor Kenneth Matengu said.
Of these graduates, 70% are women and 30% men, he said, adding that there remains great concern about what is happening to the boy child.
Matengu said individuals should take time to find out where things go wrong for the boy child.
He also touched on the university’s accomplishments over the past 30 years.
“Unam in 1992 had an enrolment of 3 639 students, and in 2022, 28 467 - slightly fewer compared to 30 307 in 2021.”
He added that the institution’s professors have also increased to 83 compared to 30 in 1992, while there has also been an increase in the number of students graduating from the university compared to 1992’s 601.
Furthermore, the university’s chancellor, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, said the education system has made concerted efforts to empower the girl child to enable them to receive education, realise their potential and contribute to national development.
However, the boy child is now lagging behind in terms of higher education, he said.
Efforts must now be directed to the boy child to bring them on par with their female counterparts, he said.
“Are our sons and nephews ready to face the challenge? If not, at least we have opened the academic gates for them to come in, stay in, graduate and secure good paying jobs that will enable them to live decent lives.”
