Success at this year's Sandman Triathlon for DHPS
With more than 500 participants, the FNB Sandman Triathlon, which took place in Swakopmund over the past weekend, has become Namibia's biggest triathlon.
With 88 athletes, Windhoek's Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS) proved to be a formidable force at the competition.
Ilona Sickel, a teacher at the school, worked hard to get the school's 27 teams and 17 individual participants ready.
Team competitors competed in a relay format, where one person handled the swimming leg, another the cycling leg and a third the running leg.
Individual entrants, meanwhile, competed in each of the three events in turn over four distinct distances. Athletes from DHPS competed over all distances.
In the ultra-distance, encompassing a 1.9 km swim, a 40 km bike ride and a 21 km run, Philipp Sonntag secured a notable second place in his age group.
The morning saw DHPS athletes at the starting line for the standard distance (1 km swim, 40 km bike, 10 km run), with Ayden Jiao emerging as the second-fastest swimmer in this competitive field. His relay team, which included Stephan Dreyer and Verena Zweier, claimed second place, while another team consisting of Jana Kehrmann, Adriaan Maartens and Raica Coelho (grade 11) emerged as winners. Gudrun Marschall dominated the standard distance in her age group as a solo starter.
Results
Notable results were seen in the sprint distance (400 m swim, 10 km cycle and 3 km run), with Laura Voss placing third in the elite category and Kyra Marschall taking second in the U15 division. The boys' event was won by the DHPS Trivengers, who included Thomas Riha, Fynn Middelton and Kito Gallert. In contrast, the DHPS Fireflies, which included Kyra Marschall, Lilly Marschall and Anne Cramer, took second in the relays. Ayden Jiao, Conrad Dempsey and Nadia Roxin's DHPS team took first place in the mixed category, while the Büttner family placed third.
The mini-triathlon (150 m swim, 6 km cycle, 3 km run) was the last event to receive the starting signal. The class emerged victorious, led by seventh-grader Emily Zander and sixth-grader Ayla McFarlane. In commendable second place was her brother, Max McFarlane.
Kyle Middelton, Regine Schäfer and Tristen Büttner won third place in the relay.
