Starting your day right with a balanced breakfast
Ensuring high performance through diet
Starting the day wit h a good breakfast can be a game-changers when it comes to academic performance.
We have all heard the saying that “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” and it's true!
Why? Because how you start your day can determine how the rest of your day fares.
According to dietitian Marich Gouws, the best meal for primary school learners includes high-fibre cereal, milk and fruit.
For high school learners, breakfast is similar but should also include a protein such as eggs that can help improve satiety and stamina for optimal concentration until break time.
“A balanced meal is a crucial part of a child's mental capacity. Without a proper breakfast, break time snack and lunch, children's capacity to perform at school is greatly impacted,” Gouws says.
She added that without a proper breakfast, children will not have enough glucose to provide them with energy to concentrate during school.
If learners do not have a high-fibre breakfast but rather sugary cereal, they will experience an increase in blood sugar and shortly thereafter, a crash in their blood sugar which will make them feel fatigued quickly without the ability to concentrate.
Proper nutrition during childhood is also crucial as this ensures brain development that will help learners achieve milestones and higher performance. Including a high-fibre option of cereal, together with milk products (to provide protein for fullness and muscle development, as well as calcium for bone density) and possibly a fruit, will ensure that students are able to focus during class and have the best ability to learn and retain information.
