A total of 3 072 students have graduated from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) this year. At the institution’s second graduation ceremony for the year, held last week, 323 students from the faculty of commerce, human sciences and education; 95 students from the faculty of computing and informatics; 115 students from the faculty of building and engineering, and 56 students from the faculty of health and applied sciences graduated. Additionally, 101 master’s students and 34 international students from eight countries received qualifications.

Of these graduates, 52% are men and 48% women.

The number of students at the October graduation ceremony paled in comparison to the April event, where 2 350 students graduated.

The university’s vice-chancellor Erold Naomeb said this year, NUST saw its largest number of graduates receive their qualifications in one year.

This year, three post-graduate programmes have seen students graduating for the first time – master’s of marketing, master’s of human resources and master’s of management. The programmes are all offered by the faculty of commerce, human sciences and education.

This is the second time the university held its graduation ceremony on its main campus in Windhoek. In the past, all graduation ceremonies took place at the Safari Court Hotel and Conference Centre, while in 2020 and 2021, the ceremonies took place virtually.

“Find something worth fighting for,” Naomeb said in his message to the graduates.

He told them there is no time to waste and that they should forever lead with their best foot forward.

Also speaking at the event, minister of higher education, training and innovation Dr Itah Kandji-Murangi touched on the psychosocial stress that comes with pursuing higher education. “I and many others understand the trials and tribulations that you students have gone through to complete your education. It certainly was not easy,” she said in her keynote address.

She added that life after university does not get any easier as it is a lifetime of tests and assignments in a never-ending, vicious cycle of living life with its many challenges.

However, the fact they have made it to graduation proves that they will indeed be able to overcome these challenges, she said.
