The clinic underscores a dedication to fostering academic excellence and holistic development in Tsumeb and the Oshikoto Region.
Dundee Precious Metals (DPM) Tsumeb Community Trust, in collaboration with the Oshikoto directorate of education and the University of Namibia's (Unam) José Eduardo dos Santos campus, has taken a significant step towards enhancing academic performance in Tsumeb with the launch of a mathematics and science clinic. The clinic, which was launched at the Opawa Secondary School hall, aims to provide crucial support to Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level learners in mathematics, physical science and chemistry in preparation for their final examinations in October. The beginning of this initiative traces back to when DPM Tsumeb Community Trust conducted education workshops in Tsumeb. These workshops brought together learners and teachers to address pressing issues affecting education in the region. Concerns were raised about shortages of essential resources such as furniture, textbooks, sports facilities/activities, and IT equipment. Additionally, there was profound concern over poor academic performance among grades 10, 11 and 12 learners in the town.
Responding to these challenges, the trust intensified its efforts to support schools in improving academic outcomes, with the mathematics and science clinic being one of the tangible outcomes. Max Johnson, chairperson of the trust, highlighted its commitment to educational development in Tsumeb and the broader Namibian community. He emphasised the significant financial support provided by DPM Tsumeb under the leadership of Zebra Kasete, managing director and vice-president, which makes projects like the clinic possible.
The clinic's primary objective is to enhance academic performance among grade 11 and 12 AS level learners in Tsumeb schools. With an allocation of N$500 000 earmarked for the current financial year, the clinic will cover expenses such as textbooks, stationery, transport and accommodation.
DPM Tsumeb Community Trust, Unam's José Eduardo dos Santos campus and the education directorate's Tsumeb Teachers Resource Centre are committed to a steadfast collaboration on this initiative. This collective effort highlights the unwavering dedication towards educational excellence and the holistic development of Tsumeb and the Oshikoto Region as a whole.
