UN celebrates 78 years
The United Nations (UN) celebrated 78 years of existence yesterday.
During the occasion, hosted at the local office in Klein Windhoek, the organisation revealed that since its inception, it has "faced numerous humanitarian, environmental and peacekeeping challenges, providing food to 90 million people in 75 countries, assisting 34 million refugees, authorising 71 peacekeeping missions and coordinating 140 nations to minimise climate change".
"The UN family safeguards human rights with 80 treaties and declarations, supports democratic elections in 50 countries annually, and provides vaccinations for nearly 60% of the world's children," the office said in a statement.
This year's celebration showcased its collaboration in Namibia in areas such as health, nutrition, education, climate change, gender-based violence, employment and social protection, it added.
"This illustrates how working together with diverse partners can help overcome challenges. Women, youth, children and marginalised groups are at the heart of the work of the UN."

During her keynote address, resident coordinator Hopolang Phororo said the UN remains committed to supporting the Namibian government's efforts towards the completion of the sixth National Development Plan.
“[It] is currently being formulated and is also at an important juncture, where we are developing our sustainable development cooperation framework 2025-2029.
“We will be calling upon the government and other partners to join us on this journey. The outcome of the 2024 Summit of the Future will be reflected in our cooperation framework, as we consider issues such as science, technology, innovation, digital cooperation, youth, future generations and transforming global governance,” she said.
What is worth noting is that Namibia is playing a key role as a co-facilitator with Germany for this very defining opportunity to tackle the most urgent challenges and where world leaders will renew their commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation, Phororo added.
