Taking heavenly sounds to the streets

"We are six members in the brass band and during the week - especially on Fridays - we divide ourselves into small groups and play at various places in town. We're collect money so we can record an album and so we can buy ourselves decent clothes. Clothes that are the same so everyone can see we belong to Genesis Brass Band," trumpet player Eric Nakasole (26) said.

He learnt to play the instrument from his aunt at the age of 15.

"My aunt learnt from the master Jefta Goraseb. And she continued to teach it to us through the generations. Wind instruments are in our blood."

Nakasole was part of Hope Brass Band with his friends and together they released three albums.

"However, the six of us started Genesis Brass Band. It's a band for young people and we now want to release an album."

Passionate about music

He doesn't just play the trumpet, although it is his favourite instrument.

"I love its sound. The trumpet is my passion. It's the instrument I play when I'm sad, when life is heavy or I'm down and it always makes me feel better. It's my tool when I'm happy and excited. The trumpet is simply my instrument through thick and thin. I am very passionate about music."

He also plays the guitar, drums and piano.

Genesis performs at funerals, weddings, birthday parties and all kinds of other functions.

"We would also like to collaborate with other gospel artists. People are welcome to book us via 081 305 9228 for any occasion."

"My biggest dream is to teach other children and young people how to play an instrument. I think it will keep them off the streets and busy. It is very expensive to take classes at a college. I want to teach them and maybe give them hope," he said.

According to Nakasole, it is never too late to make a change.

"Nothing is impossible. Just be strong and keep praying. Keep believing in yourself and you will get there."
