Swakopmund teams up with police for a safe festive season

Swakopmund has officially welcomed the Special Reserve Force as part of a joint initiative between the Namibian Police and the Swakopmund municipality.
The annual deployment of the law enforcement team is aimed at strengthening security and ensuring public safety during the festive season.
The municipality has committed significant resources to support this initiative, sponsoring accommodation at a cost of N$147 026.88 and food expenses amounting to N$14 929.63.
Municipal spokesperson Linda Mupupa said the initiative was undertaken last year too, and council intends for it to continue for as long as possible or as needed.
Strong partners
Namibian police inspector general Joseph Shikongo emphasised recently that the collaboration is not a new measure but a continuation of a tried-and-tested partnership.
"During the festive season, we deploy two sections of Special Reserve Force members to reinforce local police efforts in crime prevention," he said.
The deployment aims to ensure safety for both residents and visitors, with particular attention to the high influx of tourists during the holidays.
While specific details about operations remain confidential for security reasons, Shikongo confirmed that patrols, stop-and-search activities and bar inspections are part of their comprehensive safety strategy.
Public safety
Shikongo also urged the public to remain vigilant and exercise caution during the holidays, advising against oversharing travel plans on social media, which could alert criminals to empty homes. Travellers were also cautioned to avoid sharing sensitive personal or banking information with strangers.
To potential offenders, Shikongo delivered a clear warning: "Law enforcement is on high alert and our presence across Swakopmund and its surroundings will be firm. The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority."
Mupupa reiterated the council’s commitment to creating a secure and enjoyable holiday atmosphere through the deployment of extra boots on the ground.
