SPYL cautions govt on green hydrogen terms

The Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) yesterday said it has taken note of “serious allegations” around the ongoing negotiations between German company Hyphen and the Namibian government about the green hydrogen project.
On Sunday, Affirmative Repositioning activist Job Amupanda said, as part of the deal, government is promising to build houses for German employees in Lüderitz, not issue mining licences and mining rights to anyone for 42 years in coastal areas and change the Diamond Act at the behest of the Germans.
Director-general of the National Planning Commission Obeth Kandjoze yesterday accused Amupanda of ‘manipulating’ facts. Weighing in, SPYL yesterday warned the government negotiation team “not to agree to terms that may not be in conformity with our laws”. The league urged the team to embark on wider consultation.
“Updates [must] be given to the nation as the process unfolds; this is to avoid losing trust from the citizenry. The terms [must] be made public to stakeholders through their representatives... The interests of the nation remain a priority and Namibia is not for sale, as alleged.”
