Six steal drought-relief food
Suspects denied bail
Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga said the crime caused a backlog in the distribution of food within the region's constituencies.
Six public servants who allegedly stole drought-relief food at the Oshikango warehouse in the Ohangwena Region appeared in court last week and have been denied bail. Their case has been postponed to 2 April for further police investigations.
The suspects have been identified as Minna Uukule (33), Jeipo Delany Hilongwa (42), Nehemia Shoovaleka (36), Gerrie van Wyk (42), Fillemon Shikongo (44) and Simon Joseph (33).
According to Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga, the crime caused a backlog in the distribution of food within the region’s constituencies.
He, however, assured residents that the regional council is working around the clock to rectify the situation.
During a regional leadership engagement at Epembe constituency last week, some residents expressed their disappointment due to the lack of drought relief for many households.
“It was not only Epembe. Different constituencies have expressed concern and we are attending to it. We will try our best to make sure no life is lost due to lack of food and those who need it most have been attended to,” Ndeitunga said.

The Office of the Prime Minister, under which the drought-relief programme falls, issued a statement expressing great concern about the theft of the food items.
Chief public relations officer Rhingo Mutambo advised the public to refrain from buying drought-relief food, adding that they should notify the police of any suspicious sales of food items in their area.
He also urged all 14 regional councils to safeguard the drought-relief food and ensure the timely distribution of these items to the intended beneficiaries.
