SDFN builds new houses in Opuwo
News in short
The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia (SDFN) recently constructed 112 houses in Opuwo.
This brings the federation’s total in the Kunene Region to 360.
According to SDFN’s Kuuokuta Tjipa, the federation consists of 43 groups across the region. They have 1 290 members, of which 1 100 are women, with savings totalling N$1.4 million.
The initiative started in 2013 with two groups in the town and expanded in 2015. In 2016, SDFN received land from the town council, which was subdivided into 300 plots.
"We received the land with the condition that we will do all the servicing and surveying. In 2018 during phase one, we built 27 houses; in 2020, 59 houses, and last year, 26 houses. All the houses have now been handed over to their owners.”
Another 20 members’ houses have been approved for construction, she said.
