SADC deploys election observers to Madagascar
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced the deployment of its Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Madagascar for the upcoming legislative elections scheduled for 29 May. This initiative aligns with Article 3 of the revised SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021).
Following an official invitation from the government of Madagascar on 17 April, SADC mobilised its resources to ensure a comprehensive observation mission. The mission's primary goal is to ensure the elections comply with SADC’s democratic principles, which emphasise citizen participation, the prevention of political violence and equal opportunities for all political parties.
From 21 to 29 May, the head of mission, Organ Troika and SADC Electoral Advisory Council will hold consultation meetings with electoral stakeholders.
On 28 May, there will be a pre-election peer exchange with other heads of electoral observation missions, hosted by SEOM. Election Day on 29 May will involve field observations and media coverage.
