Punches to fly at kickboxing tournament

The Namibian Kickboxing Federation (NKF) is set to host the 'Tatami Heroes' kickboxing tournament on 26 August in Swakopmund.

The aim of the tournament is to create awareness and promote the sport of kickboxing in Namibia, as well as the athletes.

The tournament will see at least 20 bouts, with only kickboxers from the Erongo Region taking part in this edition of the tournament.

Greater heights

NKF secretary general Jackeline Sass said: "This is the first time we are hosting the 'Tatami Heroes' with the aim of focusing on the tatami styles of kickboxing, namely, point fighting, light contact and forms."

Sass added that all participants must adhere to the WAKO rules for kickboxing.

Sass urged the community to attend the tournament in large numbers. "We are going to witness our little ones show incredible spirit, camaraderie and bravery, and also to educate the public on the beautiful sport of kickboxing."

She said there are "misconceptions that this is a violent sport, but with our affiliation with both WAKO and the Olympic Committee, safety is of paramount importance and violence is not tolerated."

Sass said they are planning to host two more events this year.
