Pronk wins bronze at African Beach Games

Suzelle Pronk, a karate athlete who has been representing Namibia at the Karate Senior Female Kata Division at the African Beach Games in Mauritius since last week, won bronze at the competition on Sunday.

Pronk won the bronze after defeating Senegal’s Assatou Simalin in the crossover bronze medal match she qualified for after losing in the semi-finals to Algeria’s Narimene Dalheb on 24 June.

Dalheb took gold eventually.

Pronk explained: "Karate third place is joint third because of eliminations and the pools. The first place was taken by Algeria, Morocco took the second, and I tied for the third place with South Africa."

This is the second time she is participating in the games. When she took part in 2019, she brought home a silver medal.

The other Namibian athlete who has qualified for the tournament is Phillip Seidler, an open-water swimmer. He will be swimming tomorrow.

"I had a lot of support from the Namibia National Olympic Committee, who made this trip possible," said Pronk.

The games are taking place from 22 to 31 June.
