Information and communication technology minister Emma Theofelus says her ministry is driven by a clear and unwavering vision: to transform the country into a digitally inclusive nation where technology empowers all citizens and acts as a cornerstone for progress.

Theofelus made these remarks last week at PowerCom’s groundbreaking ceremony at Mupini in the Kavango West Region.

She said this vision underpins every aspect of the government’s work, from crafting national policy to spearheading critical infrastructure development initiatives.

“We are actively pursuing several initiatives that weave the fabric of this digital future. Our Smart Namibia strategy focuses on leveraging technology as a powerful tool to propel economic growth, enhance service delivery across sectors, and empower citizens to actively participate in shaping their destinies," she said.

"The Access for All programme is a cornerstone initiative dedicated to expanding broadband connectivity nationwide, particularly in underserved rural areas like Kavango West. These initiatives are not mere pronouncements; they are concrete steps, meticulously planned and diligently executed, to ensure all Namibians have the opportunity to thrive in the digital age."

Empowering communities

She added that PowerCom is not simply constructing infrastructure – they are building bridges.

“They are bridging the digital divide, connecting people to a world of information and opportunity, and empowering the Kavango West to actively participate in the digital age. This newfound connectivity will pave the way for a wave of innovation and entrepreneurship, fostering economic growth that will lead to a more prosperous Rundu and a more vibrant Kavango Region,” Theofelus said.

PowerCom’s CEO Beatus Amadhila said building infrastructure is just one piece of the puzzle.

“We understand the importance of fostering strong relationships with the communities we serve. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the people of Mupini and the Kavango West Region to ensure that these towers serve your needs effectively. This includes actively seeking your feedback on how we can optimise the tower's use and identify new sites,” he said.

“We are open to exploring further opportunities to expand connectivity throughout the region, prioritising areas currently lacking access. We envision these towers as catalysts for positive change, a foundation for collaboration, and a springboard for innovation,” Amadhila added.

Vital connections

PowerCom’s member of the board of directors, Tonata Nghifitikeko, noted that the decision to establish a tower in Mupini was driven by a clear recognition of the region's dynamic potential.

“The Kavango West is a thriving and expanding hub with tremendous opportunities. We identified the urgent need for enhanced connectivity to empower the people of Mupini and unlock the full economic and social potential of this area," she said.

"This tower will serve as a vital connection, bridging the digital divide and ensuring that the people of Mupini are integral participants in the digital age. With better access to reliable telecommunication services, Mupini will be in a stronger position to attract businesses, encourage innovation, and create new opportunities for its residents."
