Pathfinder programme to boost jobs
Labour minister Utoni Nujoma says more job opportunities for youth can be expected after Namibia's designation as a pathfinder country last year in the United Nations Global Accelerator of Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions programme.
The global accelerator is implemented in a selected number of pathfinder countries that have considerable potential and are committed to amplifying investments in jobs and social protection.
The programme proposes a coherent framework for action, bringing together relevant policy solutions and the necessary investments through enhanced multilateral cooperation.
“The global accelerator will be implemented through a partnership with the United Nations, trade unions, employer’s organisations, and other role players,” Nujoma said.
Funding proposals
Nujoma said the ministry expects the programme to have a measurable impact on unemployment, which is threatening the future of the youth.
He said government is hosting a number of roundtables, from which Namibia will submit a joint proposal with several UN agencies to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDG) for funding to initiate, in the coming months, selected programmes that have the potential to create thousands of jobs, particularly for the youth, and to support new sustainable enterprises, Nujoma said.
“In the area of social protection, in addition to the national pension fund, the global accelerator programme will support the introduction of a national unemployment insurance fund and will examine how to extend maternity protection to those women not covered by social security," the minister explained.
