The Oshakati Town Council has tabled its 2024/25 provisional budget totalling N$243 million.

The budget is subject to approval by the urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni.

The biggest chunk of the budget, N$32 million, is earmarked for the construction of a sewer treatment plant in Oshakati.

Service improvement

Presenting the budget, Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango said that the budget aligns with the total estimated operating income and expenditure, resulting in a balanced budget with no deficit or surplus.

Hango said other projects the council has budgeted for include Oshakati North Ext 12 and the Evululuko Sewer reticulation project, which will be constructed at a cost of N$12.2 million.

The construction of services at Extension 16 for N$3.5 million and of bulk water services in Ompumbu at the cost of N$7.6 million are also part of the budget.

“Upgrading of roads includes the upgrading of Okatana Open Market Road; upgrading of Oshakati NHE roads to tarred roads will be done at the cost of N$9 million, while the formalisation of Onawa will be done at a cost of N$1.3 million,” he said.

The construction of storm water channels around town and road speed humps, Hango said, will be undertaken for N$1.7 million.

Designing and groundwork for an incinerator for the landfill site at Othingo will cost N$500 000.

Key focus areas

Hango said the projects fall under capital projects. However, other initiatives are also budgeted for.

“This year, our budget focuses on several key priorities that align with our long-term strategic goals. These priorities include economic development, infrastructure improvement, social services enhancement and environmental sustainability,” he said.

Hango encouraged all citizens to remain engaged, provide feedback and participate in the decision-making processes that shape the town's future, saying they remain committed to listening to the plights of their residents.
