Omaruru PowerSave Street Mile marks decade milestone
The Omaruru PowerSave Street Mile celebrates its tenth anniversary on Saturday, with the first race starting at 07:30 in front of the municipality on the main road.
This street mile took its first steps in 2013 with less than 500 participants. In 2022, almost 1 300 athletes participated, and this year, 1 500 hopefuls are getting ready to participate.
Athletes from Zambia and Botswana should provide Namibia's top elite runners from the Correctional Services, Namibian Defence Force and NamPol with good competition.
Chief organiser Bethold Karumendu said: “I sat one day in 2013 wondering what I could do to bring something to Omaruru. The idea for a street mile then took hold with me because it offers athletes a challenge that requires speed and endurance.
"It took six months before I got a sponsor who gave N$30 000. Here we are ten years later, still with Erongo PowerSave as the main sponsor, and this year, a total of N$130 000 is up for grabs to be won in the respective divisions."
Karumendu thanked Erongo PowerSave "for your support and trust in us."
The event is also supported by FNB Omaruru as well as Coca-Cola.
