Staff members from the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) showcased exceptional talent and sportsmanship at the 23rd Southern African Universities Staff Sports Association (SAUSSA) Games.

Held earlier this month in Harare, Zimbabwe, the event was staged under the theme, ‘Fostering Regional Integration Through Sports’.

It saw the NUST delegation of 88 participants achieve remarkable success, earning high rankings in several disciplines.

According to NUST spokesperson Cindy-Lee van Wyk, the university's chess team emerged victorious, taking first place with a commanding performance that impressed competitors from over 21 universities.

The netball and women’s tennis teams also excelled, securing third-place finishes and demonstrating the university’s diverse athletic capabilities.

Lutopu Khoa, a member of the winning chess team, shared her pride in the team’s accomplishments.

She highlighted their journey from being underestimated to earning the respect of their competitors, emphasising that the experience was not just about winning but about building connections across the region.

For her, the camaraderie and friendly interactions with participants from other universities were among the tournament's highlights.

The chairperson of the NUST Staff Sport and Social Club, Gabriel Mbokoma, commended the delegation for their dedication and teamwork.

He described it as an honour to lead such a dynamic group that represented the NUST brand with pride and integrity.

Mbokoma also emphasised the broader significance of the SAUSSA Games, noting that they provided a platform for fostering collaboration, enhancing teamwork and promoting personal growth beyond the academic and administrative environment.

"The university’s participation in the SAUSSA Games is part of its broader strategy to engage staff in activities that support physical and mental well-being, while strengthening regional partnerships.

“NUST extends its gratitude to the organisers, the Zimbabwe Open University, as the host institution, and fellow competitors for a memorable event," Van Wyk notes in a statement.

Through its success at the SAUSSA Games, NUST continues to demonstrate its commitment to excellence, unity and regional integration.
